NEW DEPARTMENT HEADS NAMED AT UNCG
GREENSBORO--New department heads have been named at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The appointments became effective on Aug. 1.
New to the campus is Dr. Marilyn Friend, who will be head of the Department of Special Education Services in the School of Education. She succeeds Dr. Edgar Shroyer. Friend comes from the School of Education at Indiana University-Purdue University, where she was a professor of special education and had been a faculty member since 1992. Earlier, she was a member of the special education faculty at Northern Illinois University from 1986-92 and at the University of Oklahoma from 1982-86.
She has published extensively in professional journals and is co-author of the books "Interactions: Collaboration Skills for School Professionals" (third edition in press) and "Including Students with Special Needs: A Practical Guide for Classroom Teachers" (second edition 1999). Friend has worked on research which has received funding totaling more than $1.6 million. She holds the Ph.D. degree from Indiana University.
With the exception of Friend, all of the new department heads are current UNCG faculty members. All will serve a four-year appointment. The former heads have returned to full-time teaching and research in their departments. The following UNCG faculty members were named department heads:
Dr. Susan Shelmerdine, associate professor of classical studies, as head of the Department of Classical Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. Shelmerdine joined the UNCG faculty in 1981 and received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan. She succeeds Dr. Jeffrey Soles.
Dr. Stephen Danford, professor of physics and astronomy, as head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. Danford came to UNCG in 1976 and earned his doctorate from Yale University. He succeeds Dr. Gaylord Hegeseth.
Dr. Denise Baker, professor of English, as head of the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences. A faculty member since 1975, Baker holds the Ph.D. degree from the University of Virginia. She succeeds Dr. James Evans.
Dr. John Rife, associate professor of social work, as head of the Department of Social Work, Department of Human Environmental Sciences. Rife joined the UNCG faculty in 1990 and holds the Ph.D. degree from Ohio State University. He succeeds Dr. Thomas Scullion, who has retired.
Dr. Daniel Bibeau, associate professor of public health education, as head of the Department of Public Health Education in the School of Health and Human Performance. Bibeau joined the UNCG faculty in 1984 and holds the Ph.D. degree from Pennsylvania State University. He succeeds Dr. Keith Howell.
