DR. MARIANA NEWTON SERVING AS
CHAIR OF UNCG FACULTY SENATE
GREENSBORO--Dr. Mariana Newton, an associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, is serving as chair of the Faculty Senate at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro for the 1999-2000 year.
Other officers are Dr. Daniel Winkler, professor of business administration, as chair- elect and parliamentarian; and Dr. Bennett Ramsey, an associate professor of religious studies, as secretary. In addition, Dr. Bonnie Yarbrough, a lecturer in business administration and associate director of the Women's Studies Program, is serving as secretary of the general faculty. Newton succeeds C. Thomas Lambeth, an associate professor of housing and interior design, as chair.
The Faculty Senate chair provides leadership in the faculty governance process at UNCG. The person serves as the principal spokesman for faculty concerns with the chancellor and provost. Newton's duties as chair will include presiding at meetings of the Faculty Senate and at the business session of the general faculty meetings. She also is responsible for setting the agenda for both meetings in consultation with the chancellor, provost and Faculty Senate officers. She also will serve as chair of the committee on promotions and tenure.
Newton received the School of Health and Human Performance's Teaching
Excellence Award for 1999. A UNCG faculty member since 1969, Newton also
serves as director of graduate studies in the Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders. She is a member of UNCG's interdisciplinary gerontology
program committee. She is a past president of the N.C. Speech Hearing Language
Association and a past vice president of the American Speech Language Hearing
Association. She received her undergraduate and master's degrees
from the University of Redlands and her Ph.D. degree from Northwestern
University.
