KELLOGG INSTITUTE CERTIFIES PATTERSON

GREENSBORO--Andrea R. Patterson, assistant director of the Learning Assistance Center at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has been certified as a developmental education specialist by the Kellogg Institute.

Patterson was one of 45 educators across the country selected to participate in the institute's certification program for the 1998-99 academic year. She joins fewer than 600 professionals nationwide who have attained certification.

The institute's training and certification is for those educators who work with academically under-prepared college students. The program focused on assessment and placement, teaching and learning, academic support and program evaluation.

Patterson's participation resulted in a tutor training course which she designed and implemented. The training course will prepare tutors to be proficient in the areas of course content, affective and cognitive issues and study strategies.

Her participation also resulted in a $500 competitive scholarship from the Houghton Mifflin Faculty Development Program. The scholarship is awarded to the one Kellogg Institute participant who assists educators in reaching the goal of helping college students become successful.
