HUMARTS AWARD GOES TO KAREN POOLE
GREENSBORO--Karen "Pea" Poole, a lecturer in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has received the first HUMARTS Award.
The honor recognizes a faculty member's commitment to service that is supported by good teaching and professional publication.
Poole teaches courses in physical education and is an advisor to undergraduate students. She is a supervisor with the Project Effort Youth Leadership project. Her community activities have included Habitat for Humanity, Winter Walk for AIDS, Triad Health Project and the Women Only Race.
She is a veteran teacher with 20 years experience and has taught students from junior high school to college levels. A graduate of Bishop Otter College in West Sussex, England, Poole received her master's degree from Appalachian State University, where she also taught physical education and coached field hockey. She held a Fulbright Teacher Exchange Grant from 1985-86
The award was created through a gift from Dr. Celeste Ulrich, an alumna and a professor emerita of UNCG. HUMARTS is named for Ulrich and two of her former colleagues at UNCG, Dr. Rosemary McGee and Dr. Gail Hennis. In the award's name, "HUMARTS" stands for "Hennis, Ulrich, McGee Assisting Research, Teaching, Service." The fund was created as part of The Second Century Campaign for UNCG.
