LUTHER SELF SCULPTURE RELIEF UNVEILED;
GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS GIVEN AT UNCG

GREENSBORO--Luther W. Self's legacy continues in the School of Education at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and graduate students who hold the fellowships that bear his name can now view his likeness in a new relief sculpture.

The new relief will be hung in the Curry Building, which is home to the School of Education. Created by artist Jim Barnhill, the work is cast in bronze. It was unveiled recently and was given by Self's widow, Mrs. Sara "Sally" Smith Self of Asheboro, who also funds the fellowships each year. Attending at the ceremony were this year's Self Fellowship recipients, faculty in the school, Dean Dr. David Armstrong and Chancellor Patricia Sullivan.

This year's recipients of Self Fellowships are all graduate students in the Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations who are working toward Ph.D. degrees. They are Monica Davis, Gwendolyn Guy, Justen Infinito, Marty Miller and Kristin Poppo, all of Greensboro;  Cathy Canzona of Rural Hall; Susan Harden of Charlotte; Douglass Everhart of Lexington; and Anna McCurry of Lewisville.

The fellowships were created in 1997 to honor the late Dr. Luther W. Self of Asheboro, who earned a Ph.D. degree at UNCG in May of 1997 at age 73.  Dr.  Self died on Sept. 21, 1997. The fund provides financial assistance to doctoral students in the institution's School of Education.

One or more Self Fellowships are awarded annually to promising graduate students in the Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations who require financial assistance to complete their doctoral programs. The fellowships, which can be renewed, are  awarded to students who best exemplify Self's courage, integrity and dedication to public service.

The fellowship program is being administered by a committee in the Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations. Preference is given to students at the dissertation writing stage. The fellowship is used to offset general education expenses related to the preparation and completion of a dissertation.

 native of Greensboro, Self was a graduate of N.C. State University and received a Master of Business Administration degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. His career included work with Burlington Industries, Blue Bell and Stedman Manufacturing Company. In 1970, he started his own company, Designer Studio, Inc., that manufactured custom-designed clothing for children. He sold the company in 1984. Turning to education, he then taught and studied as part of his lifelong interest in learning. He taught courses in textiles and apparel at UNCG for six years as a visiting faculty member.
