Dr. Arthur Tollefson
MUSIC DEAN RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL MUSIC HONOR

GREENSBORO--Dr. Arthur R. Tollefson, dean of the School of Music at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, was honored for his contribution to the arts by the Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity.

Tollefson was named a National Arts Associate. Previous recipients of the honor include musicians Dave Brubeck, Van Cliburn and Henry Mancini. The honor goes to women and men who are nationally recognized for distinguished contributions to the arts.

In its induction remarks, the Fraternity cited Tollefson's accomplishments "as a Steinway artist, a national president of the College Music Society and an internationally respected music administrator."

Tollefson chaired the International Society for Music Education's Commission on the Education of the Professional Musician for two years. He has been very active in the National Association of Schools of Music and currently chairs the Music Teachers' National Association's College Faculty Forum Advisory Committee. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano from Stanford University and has been the dean of the UNCG School of Music since 1984. More recently, he has overseen the construction of the new UNCG School of Music building which opened in August.
