GREENSBORO--The poetic, athletic style of the Jan Van Dyke Dance Group will be on display Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 12-14 at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The 8 p.m. performances will take place in the UNCG Dance Theater in the School of Health and Human Performance Building on Walker Ave. Free parking is available in the lot at the corner of Walker and Aycock Avenues. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for seniors and students and $3 for UNCG students, and may be purchased through the University Box Office and Arts Information Center (336-334-4849) weekdays, noon-6 p.m.
Van Dyke, who is an associate professor of dance at UNCG, has been creating dances for over 30 years. Her works have been performed throughout the U.S. and Europe and are designed to be accessible to a variety of audiences. The program will include five works choreographed between 1982 and 1999.
"Spike" is a fast moving quartet. "Quatre Femmes" is a dance for four women and will take place with a simultaneous showing of a video by Michael Frierson, an associate professor in the UNCG Department of Broadcasting/Cinema and Theatre. "Quicksilver" is a dance for nine set to minimalist music. "Jive" is performed by seven dancers to a neo-swing score. "Adagio" consists of three sections excerpted from a longer dance.
The Van Dyke Dance Group is a funded member agency of the United Arts Council of Greensboro. It is a company of 11 professionals in residence at the UNCG Department of Dance. Active since 1989, the group performs a broad repertory choreographed by Van Dyke.
