N.C. FIRMS RECEIVE WELL WORKPLACE AWARDS

GREENSBORO--Five North Carolina companies received  Well Workplace Awards at the annual conference of the Wellness Council of North Carolina (WCNC), held Nov. 3-5 in Charlotte.

The awards recognized the businesses as being among the state's healthiest places to work. The companies were honored for their achievements in work site health promotion . Each has been added to the "America's Healthiest Companies" list, kept by the Wellness Councils of America. Well Workplace Awards are given on three levels and this year's recipients were as follows:

    Gold Awards, High Point Regional Health Systems and Mission St. Joseph's of Asheville, given to those companies that have integrated wellness into the culture of the organization and have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to employee health.
    Silver Awards, Novartis Crop Protection of Greensboro, Wake Forest University  Baptist Medical Center of Winston-Salem and Margaret R. Pardee Memorial Hospital of Hendersonville, given to companies that demonstrate a movement to behavior change in employee health habits as a result of the company's wellness efforts.
    Excellence in Health Promotion Awards, to Ciba Specialty Chemical Corp. of High Point for the stress-management and ergonomic services provided to employees, and to Carlis "Leon" Teague for his dedication to the City of Burlington's employee Wellness program.
 
The WCNC is a non-profit member organization dedicated to the promotion of wellness in the work place. It serves over 200 member companies across the state of North Carolina. The council is part of the  Institute for Health, Science and Society at The University  of North Carolina at Greensboro, and is affiliated with the Wellness Councils of America.

The 1999 award winners join approximately 300 organizations across the United States as America's healthiest companies. The Well Workplace Awards give recipients national recognition for striving for excellence in health promotion.

Keynote speaker for the awards event was Lanty Smith, chairman of the board of Precision Fabrics Group. "The Art of Working Well: Defining Leadership in an Era of Change" was the conference theme. Approximately 200 business and health leaders from the Southeastern United States attended the conference. The council's annual conference is designed to bring emerging issues in wellness and prevention to business, health and community leaders.
