UNCG ALUMNA ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP FOR NORTHEASTERN N.C. STUDENTS
GREENSBORO -- A 1972 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a northeastern North Carolina native wants to ensure that some of the students in that part of the state have a chance to attend her alma mater by establishing a scholarship fund.
Dr. Emily R. Peele, a Chowan County native and daughter of the late Henderson Ray Peele and Ruth Privott Peele, has established an endowed scholarship fund in memory of her mother, to cover the cost of tuition and fees for eligible students.
The Ruth Privott Peele Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to students from Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Martin, Northhampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington counties. Other criteria for the award require a student to initially be an incoming freshman at UNCG with a high school grade point average of 3.5 or higher and a minimum SAT score of 1100. The scholarship will be renewed for up to three years as long as the student is full-time and maintains a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Ruth Peele graduated from Chowan High School in 1940 as salutatorian of her class and entered the Woman's College (now UNCG) that fall. She graduated in 1944 with a bachelor of art's degree in Grammar Grade Education. She taught elementary school for two years in Windsor and then returned to Chowan County. She and her husband, Henderson Ray Peele, had two children, Emily and Jim. Ruth Peele died in February of 1998.
Emily Peele, like her mother, graduated from Chowan High School and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Peele later received a master's of science degree in environmental sciences and engineering from the UNC-Chapel Hill and a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Georgia. She is a professor of Biology at Western Washington University.
