FOUR UNCG FACULTY MEMBERS
HONORED BY NURSING SOCIETY

GREENSBORO -- Four faculty members in the School of Nursing at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro have been honored by the Gamma Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International nursing honor society.

The awards recognize chapter members for their work in the four areas the society emphasizes: research, practice, leadership and education.

The following faculty members received awards: Dr. Rebecca B. Saunders, an associate professor, Excellence in Research; Kay J. Cowen, a clinical assistant professor, Excellence in Practice; Mary Jo Helfers, a clinical assistant professor, Excellence in Leadership; and Martha D. Eakes, a clinical associate professor, Excellence in Education.

The Gamma Zeta Chapter has more than 900 members in the Triad area.

Saunders joined UNCG’s faculty in 1977. She is North Carolina section chair of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neo-Natal Nurses. In 1995, she was selected as one of the Great 100 Registered Nurses in North Carolina. She received her doctorate from UNCG.

Cowen joined UNCG’s nursing faculty in 1984. She is a member of the American Nurses Association and North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA). She was named to North Carolina’s Great 100 Registered Nurses in 1997 and was named pediatric nurse of the year by the NCNA in 1995. She received her master’s degree from UNCG.

Prior to joining UNCG’s faculty in 1994, Helfers taught for two years at Augusta College in Georgia and spent 20 years in the Army Nurse Corps. She received her master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

Eakes has been a nursing faculty member since 1989. She is a past winner of a School of Nursing Teaching Excellence Award, the North Carolina March of Dimes Maternal Child Nurse of the Year Award and Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Gamma Zeta Chapter Leadership Award. She was named in 1992 as one of the Great 100 Registered Nurses in the state. Eakes received her master’s degree from UNCG.
