GREENSBORO -- Faculty members in accounting and business
administration at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro have
received the 1999 Teaching Excellence Awards in the Joseph M. Bryan
School of Business and Economics.
The winners were Dr. Susan Anderson, an associate professor
and head of the Department of Accounting, and Dr. Bradley Kirkman, an
assistant professor in the Department of Business Administration. Each
received a $1,000 prize at the school's recognition and diploma
ceremony on May 16.
Speaker for the event was Dr. James Weeks, dean of the school.
Students, alumni, faculty and staff may nominate individuals for the
award. Final selection is made by a committee consisting of a
representative from each of the Bryan School's departments.
Funding for the award was provided by UNC General
Administration, which allocated money for the 16 campuses in the UNC
system to reward excellence in teaching within their academic colleges
and professional schools.
In presenting the award to Anderson, Weeks noted that a
nominating student wrote of Anderson's teaching of her subject: "This
is very difficult subject matter. She teaches it to us, she doesn't
lecture; and she provides us with the tools to understand it."
Anderson joined the UNCG faculty in 1991. She is serving as
associate editor of the Journal of the American Taxation Association.
Before receiving her Ph.D. degree in accounting from the University of
Texas at Arlington, Anderson obtained her undergraduate and master's
degree from North Texas State University. She is a certified public
accountant and previously worked for one of the big six accounting
firms.
In presenting the award to Kirkland, Weeks said a student had
written: "He is an outstanding example of the teacher/scholar model
and consequently may be unique in his ability to not only deliver
engaging and accessible content, but cutting edge content as well."
Kirkman has been a UNCG faculty member since 1996. His areas
of expertise are work team effectiveness, organizational change and
development, and international management. He is president of the
campus chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma national business honor society. He
has presented at conferences in Australia, Turkey, Canada and the
United States. He is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, where he also
received his Ph.D. degree, and holds the MBA degree from UNCG. He has
taught in the undergraduate, MBA and post-master's degree certificate
programs.
