GREENSBORO -- A human resources officer, a political science
student and an associate professor of biology have received the 1999
Gladys Strawn Bullard Awards at The University of North Carolina at
Greensboro.
The Bullard Awards are made annually to recognize and reward
members of the UNCG faculty, staff and student body for outstanding
leadership and service to the University. Each winner received a $500
check and a plaque when the honor was presented during the University
Excellence Awards Convocation on May 5. Bullard Award recipients were
chosen by a committee composed of faculty, staff and students, which
reviewed nominations. The winners are as follows:
* Janice A. Minyard of Reidsville, employee relations manager
in the Department of Human Resource Services, is retiring from UNCG
after 23 years of service. She coordinates recruitment and employee
relations within the department. She has used her personnel expertise
in the community, serving on the Greensboro Mayor's Council for
Employment of the Handicapped. Her work on the council earned her the
Distinguished Mayor's Committee Award. She is past president of the
Pilot Club chapter in Reidsville, and is a member of the American
Business Women's Association.
* Matthew T. Stimpson, a senior political science major from
Clemmons, served two years as student attorney general and currently
is case coordinator in the Student Government attorney general's
office. He also is a student representative on the University Planning
Council and a member of the Elliott University Center Renewal
Committee. In addition, he is a member of the Human Relations Council,
Substance Abuse Assessment Advisory Committee and served on the
Academic Integrity Executive Committee.
* Dr. Robert E. Cannon of Graham, an associate professor of
biology, joined UNCG's faculty in 1972. He has served as chair of the
Faculty Senate and numerous committees, including the Graduate
Education Committee, Promotion and Tenure Committee and Student
Excellence Awards Committee. He currently is chair of the Premedical
Advisory Committee and Faculty Committee on Due Process. He served as
interim head of the Department of Biology in 1997-98 and assistant
dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1989-93.
The Gladys Strawn Bullard Awards were established in 1981
through an endowed gift from Bern F. Bullard and his family in honor
of Mrs. Bullard, an alumna of UNCG. The family increased the endowment
this year with an additional gift. Mrs. Bullard, a Raleigh resident,
is a past president of the UNCG Alumni Association and a former member
and vice chairman of the UNCG Board of Trustees.
In 1992, Bullard received one of UNCG's 10 Centennial Awards.
She is a longtime civic leader in Raleigh, where she formerly was the
first president of the Democratic Women of Wake County and a past
president of the Raleigh Woman's Club. Through the years, she also has
served on numerous boards of nonprofit organizations.
