UNCG CHANGES REQUIREMENTS
FOR GERONTOLOGY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

GREENSBORO -- The graduate program in gerontology at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is changing degree requirements for its post-baccalaureate certificate.
Beginning in August, only 15 semester hours will be required to complete a Certificate in Gerontology at UNCG. Dr. Kathleen Williams, director of the program, said the change is being made to better meet the needs and schedules of people who work with and or want to learn about older adults. The program emphasis will continue to be integrating theoretical knowledge about the aging process and practical experience with the elderly.
Under the new requirements, five courses must be successfully completed during a four-year period of time. Students must complete two required courses in gerontology and three electives related to aging which will be selected to meet their educational objectives.
The required courses are "Seminar: Critical Issues of the Aged" and "Gerontology Practicum" or "Supervised Research." The seminar is an intensive review and analysis of the literature and research on issues of aging and the unresolved problem. The practicum is supervised experience in a structured setting for older adults, linking practice to theory; or supervised research in a relevant area of gerontology for professional development.
The elective courses are selected from different UNCG departments. Examples of such courses include those focusing on the communication skills, psychological or social development, exercise or health of the elderly.
The UNCG gerontology certificate is designed to complement practical experience or interests. Admission does not require the GRE. Most courses for the certificate are taught in the late afternoon and early evening. Information is available through the website at http://www.uncg.edu/gro or by contacting Williams at 336-334-5352 or k_willia@uncg.edu.
