SPEAKS AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Dr.
Dan Gould |
GREENSBORO -- Dr. Daniel Gould, a professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, gave an invited lecture in Rome during the fourth annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science.
Gould’s topic was "Psychological Antecedents of Athletic and Exercise Injuries." It focused on the relationship between life stress and the onset or occupancy of athletic injuries.
He also made a presentation on "Factors Influencing U.S. Olympic Athlete Performance in the 1998 Nagano Olympic Games" at the University of Wales-Bangor in the United Kingdom. Co-presenter was Christy Greenleaf, a graduate student, who has worked on Gould’s research, which has been funded by the U.S. Olympic Committee in recent years.
Gould served as a mental training facilitator at the U.S. Olympic Summit 2002, held in Park City, Utah. For the event, 70 Olympic hopefuls were invited to learn from previous champions such as Bonnie Blair, winner of five gold medals, and to take part in team-building activities.
Earlier this year, Gould was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. A UNCG faculty member since 1988, Gould teaches undergraduate and graduate classes in mental training for athletic competition and sport psychology and conducts research. Gould was a consultant to the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team at the 1998 Winter Olympics, and he has worked with the team for several years.
Gould is co-author of two books -- "Understanding Psychological Preparation for Sport" and "Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology." He is a Fellow and a past president of the American Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology. Gould has been a consultant for the U.S. Olympic Committee for several years and was co-editor of the journal The Sport Psychologist from 1987-91.
