DR. GERALD JUHNKE RECEIVES AWARD
FOR TEACHING FROM UNCG SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

GREENSBORO -- Dr. Gerald Juhnke, an associate professor in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development, received the School of Education's 1999 Teaching Excellence Award at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The award was announced at the School of Education's recognition and diploma ceremony held during UNCG commencement weekend. It was presented by Dr. James Benshoff, a colleague who received the first award in 1995. Juhnke received a $1,000 cash award and a plaque.
Funding for the award was provided by UNC General Administration, which provided money for the 16 campuses in the UNC system to reward excellence in teaching within their academic colleges and professional schools.
In presenting the award, Benshoff said that a graduate student had written: "Dr. Juhnke took an interest in my adjustment to the Master's program in counseling and provided me with invaluable suggestions and encouragement when I was struggling to make the transition from working in the field of counseling to being a counseling student." He said that student nominators had praised Juhnke's innovative and creative approaches to teaching in the classroom, his ability to help students integrate theory and practice, his enthusiasm and his attention to students.
Juhnke teaches in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development. A UNCG faculty member since 1992, he is coordinator of the department's training and research clinic, the Center for Counseling and Consultative Services. He holds the Doctor of Education degree from Western Michigan University. He is a licensed professional counselor a N.C. certified clinical addictions specialist. Juhnke served on the committee which created the first certification examination on addictions for the National Board of Certified Counselors. He has served as president of the N.C. Association for Marriage and Family Counseling and the N.C. Association for Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development.
