AMY LIXL-PURCELL WINS TEACHING AWARD

GREENSBORO -- Amy Lixl-Purcell, an assistant professor of art
at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has received the
1999 Outstanding Teaching Award for the College of Arts and Sciences.
The award carries a $1,000 prize. Faculty members in all 19
academic departments of the college with three years experience are
eligible for the annual award.
Funding for the award is provided by the UNC General
Administration, which provides money for the 16 campuses in the UNC
system to reward excellence in teaching within their colleges and
professional schools.
Lixl-Purcell joined UNCG's faculty in 1987. She established
the Digital Design Studio in the Department of Art and serves as its
director. She has developed and teaches courses in computer design,
electronic darkroom, advanced graphic design, digital visualization
and image sequencing\digital imaging. In addition to her teaching and
advising at UNCG, Lixl-Purcell has directed computer art workshops at
Parkview A+ Magnet School in High Point.
Her nominator wrote, "As a faculty member in the design
concentration, Prof. Lixl-Purcell has almost single handedly
established a program in computer technology and pedagogy. Due to her
extraordinary efforts, the department has fully integrated the digital
arts into its fine arts curriculum, and has considerably increased
student enrollment in the Design Major, and has developed a flagship
program for the State of North Carolina."
A native of Highland Park, Ill., Lixl-Purcell received her
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the New York State College of
Ceramics at Alfred University. She earned her Master of Fine Arts
degree at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.
