GREENSBORO -- Ron Platt, who was formerly curator of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), has been named curator of exhibitions at the Weatherspoon Art Gallery at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The appointment was announced by Weatherspoon Director Nancy Doll, who said Platt will fill a key curatorial role at the gallery. Platt has assumed his duties, and replaces Amy Cappellazzo, who left to take a curatorial position in Miami.
At the Weatherspoon, Platt will be responsible for organizing and managing special and temporary exhibitions that include major solo, group and thematic shows, and the annual series of Falk Visiting Artist exhibitions. Platt will also be responsible for the development of exhibitions which will travel to other arts institutions.
Until his new appointment, Platt most recently was curator for SECCA in Winston-Salem. While at SECCA, he conceived, developed and implemented one-person and thematic exhibitions and residency projects. His responsibilities included research and selection of artists and works, installation design, production of exhibition catalogs, budgeting and fund-raising.
Among the exhibitions he curated at SECCA are "Inigo Manglano-Ovalle: The Garden of Delights," "Sliding Scale" and "Parallel Worlds." He also organized the nationally touring survey exhibition of the work of Tom Friedman which will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in June 2000, and, after stops at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and the New Museum in New York City, will conclude its tour at SECCA in May 2001.
Prior to joining the staff at SECCA, Platt was assistant curator at the List Visual Arts Center, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to organizing exhibitions, he worked on educational programming, publicity, and developing corporate and foundation support.
With his appointment to the Weatherspoon staff, Platt said he is excited about returning to a university setting where the variety and quantity of academic resources present creative interdisciplinary possibilities.
A native of Gettysburg, Pa., Platt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from the University of Maryland and a Master of Business Administration in art administration from Lesley College. He has lived in North Carolina since 1996.
