GREENSBORO -- Brandon Colan Richards of Greenville has been elected president of the Student Government Association at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro for the 1999-2000 academic year.
Richards is a junior double majoring in political science and history at UNCG. A graduate of J.H. Rose High School, he is the son of Darwin Lee and Dolly Richards of 1318 Largo Road, Greenville.
Known on campus as "Bubba," Richards is very involved in campus life and never meets a stranger. He has served as head of the Appropriations Committee of the Student Government Association and as a residence housing adviser. He is also involved in the Spartan Orientation Staff and teaches orientation classes to incoming freshmen.
He ran for SGA president because he wants to get students more involved on campus. "That will be my main focus for next year," Richards said. He thinks getting students to support the basketball team is a good place to start. School spirit is important to Richards, and he thinks UNCG's new basketball coach might help to inspire that spirit.
His decision to major in political science stems from a desire to one day serve in the political arena, where his stint as SGA president can only help. He plans to start locally, but has an ultimate interest in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.
If politics doesn't work out for him, however, his avid interest in sports might serve as a substitute career.
"All of my friends say I should go into sports writing," Richards said. He writes sports articles for the UNCG newspaper, The Carolinian, and hosts a sports talk radio show called "Joe Boy and Bubba," which runs on UNCG's radio station, WUAG, Saturdays from 1-4 p.m.
His writing and his radio show helped to get him known on campus and have served him well as a training ground for a career in politics. He thinks his time on the Appropriations Committee will help him next year. "That's where I have it over previous SGA presidents," Richards said. "Because I feel I do understand where the money is going."
