GREENSBORO -- Dr. Patricia A. Sullivan, who has been
chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro since
1995, received the honorary Doctor of Pedagogy degree from her
alma mater, St. John's University, during the institutions's graduate
commencement exercises on Sunday, June 6.
Sullivan received one of two honorary degrees. The other
went to Dr. Gerald Deas, who is a physician in the Department of
Internal Medicine at Jamaica (N.Y.) Hospital. Deas, who was speaker for
the graduate commencement exercises, received the honorary Doctor
of Science degree.
The award recognizes Sullivan as a distinguished leader in
higher education. Prior to becoming the chancellor of UNCG on Jan. 1,
1995, she held leadership positions in North Carolina and Texas. UNCG
has flourished under her administration. The institution recently
completed The Second Century Campaign for UNCG, which raised $55.4
million, exceeding the original goal of $42.8 million.
Since her arrival, Sullivan began a strategic planning process
that produced the UNCG Plan. The plan is the framework for enhancing
UNCG's position as a leading student-centered university, linking the
Piedmont Triad to the world through learning, discovery and service.
Under Sullivan's leadership, enrollments at UNCG, especially
among minorities, have reached an all-time high, and academic
standards for admission have increased. Funding to support research
and community projects has grown, along with giving by the
University's friends and supporters.
Sullivan has been busy making the public case for more state
appropriations and additional funding for facilities. Among the major
capital improvements which have been completed during her tenure is
the $25 million building for the School of Music, which will be
occupied this summer. A new $5 million Baseball Stadium and Student
Recreation Area was dedicated in February 1999. A $3.2 million
renovation of Spring Garden Street was completed in August 1998.
Presently, anticipating additional state funding, design work is going
forward on a new $45.9 million Science Building.
Among her other activities, Sullivan serves as chair of the
Commission on Women in Higher Education of the American Council on
Education. She was recently the president of the Southern University
Conference, is a member of numerous boards and participates in a host
of civic activities.
A native of Staten Island, New York, Sullivan is a graduate of
St. John's University. She earned her master's degree and her Ph.D.
in biology from New York University. From 1981-87, she was dean of
the college at Salem College in Winston-Salem. She came to UNCG from
Texas Woman's University where she had been vice chancellor for
academic affairs for seven years and interim president for a year. She
is married to Dr. Charles Sullivan, an electrical and computer
software engineer.
