IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BRYAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS PRESENTS
WALL STREET JOURNAL, STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
GREENSBORO -- Angela C. Smith, a graduate student in business
education at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, received
the 1999 Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award during the
recent diploma ceremony of the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and
Economics.
The award was presented by Dr. Don McCrickard, associate dean
of the Bryan School. The Wall Street Journal Award is the highest
honor that can be bestowed on a graduating senior or graduate student
of the Bryan School.
Smith received a plaque and a subscription to the Wall Street
Journal. Each winner's name is inscribed on a plaque in the dean's
office. The recipient is selected from each year's recipients of the
Joseph M. Bryan Achievement and Leadership Awards, of which there were
four for 1999.
Smith, of 107 Rosemary Dr., Archdale, earned a Master of
Science degree in business education. She was president of the
Rotaract student organization. Under her leadership, the group
received the Most Improved Organization Award at UNCG. She also has
done volunteer work with Greensboro Urban Ministry, American Red
Cross, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greensboro Parks and
Recreation and Kids Voting. She also is youth director at her church
and participate in the Lunch Buddy Program at Lawrence John Elementary
School.
Recipients of the school's Bryan Achievement and Leadership
Awards were recognized for their superior personal achievement,
leadership and service to the school, university and community. To be
eligible, undergraduates must have a minimum grade point average of
3.0 and graduate students must have a 3.5 average of a possible 4.0.
Those who received the awards were as follows:
* Maureen E. Corcoran, a marketing management major, of 15215
Timberview Lane, Huntersville. Corcoran was president of the
International Business Society and was instrumental in organizing the
4th annual International Business Congress in Monterrey, Mexico. She
has been a delegate to Student Government, a University Ambassador and
a peer academic leader. She has done volunteer work for Friends
Greyhound Rescue.
* Elizabeth M. Pauley, a graduate student accounting major, of
1147 Browns Run Drive, Kernersville. Pauley received a Master of
Science degree. She was president of Beta Alpha Psi accounting honor
society. In the Department of Accounting, she was active in
registering students form the accounting CPE program and the
accounting educator's colloquium. She has worked in the Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance Program. She was a member of the Bryan School's
accounting team that was ranked in the Top 10 at the Arthur Anderson
Tax Challenge.
* Kevin A. Simon, a Master of Business Administration
graduate, of 2111 Churchill Drive, Greensboro. A alumnus of the Bryan
School, Simon has been president of the Bryan School Alumni
Association for five years. His academic record at the Bryan School
earned him membership in the Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society.
He also is a member of Toastmasters International.
