UNCG EXERCISE AND SPORT PROFESSORS INVITED TO SPEAK IN FRANCE

GREENSBORO Two professors in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro were recently invited to speak at the National Institute of Sport and Physical Science in Paris, France.

Dr. Diane Gill and Dr. Dan Gould presented sport psychology information, research and practice to members of the French Society of Sport Psychology Congress, which includes professionals and graduate students in exercise and sport science.
Gill gave a presentation at the opening session entitled: "Sport Psychology in U.S.A.: One View". She also organized a symposium on "Gender and Cultural Diversity in Sport and Exercise Psychology Research and Practice" and gave the first presentation of the symposium: "Moving from Gender to Cultural Competence in Sport and Exercise Psychology".

Gould's presentation: "Emotions and Sport Performance: Moving Beyond Anxiety and Arousal", provided information to identify different emotions athletes experience before and during performances.

Gill came to UNCG in 1987. She served as head of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science from 1997-2000. The second edition of her book, "The Psychological Dynamics of Sport and Exercise" was recently released. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, president of Division 47 of the American Psychology Association and past president of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. Gill was an editor of The Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology and past president of the research consortium of the AAHPERD.

A UNCG faculty member since 1988, Gould was named UNCG Bank of America Excellence Professor for 1999-2000. He is co-author of the textbooks, "Understanding Psychological Preparation for Sport" and "Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology". He is a past president of the American Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology and a Fellow of the organization. Gould has been a consultant to the U.S. Olympic Committee for several years and has spoken at international conferences in Portugal, Czech Republic, Australia, England, Korea and Japan.
