Scholars to Discuss Shakespeare Mystery Sept. 8

GREENSBORO – Who really wrote Shakespeare’s plays?

Triad area residents are invited to join a free discussion revolving around that eternal controversy with Shakespeare scholars at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, in the Alumni House on College Avenue. For more information, call Trudy Atkins at 299-0419.

Diana Price, author of “Shakespeare’s Unorthodox Biography,” and Dr. Joseph Rosenblum of the UNCG English faculty will discuss the authorship of the works attributed to William Shakespeare. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Denise Baker, head of the Department of English. A reception will follow.

The identity of the author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare has been the subject of controversy for almost two centuries. “Shakespeare’s Unorthodox Biography” undertakes a systematic analysis comparing Shakespeare with 23 other writers of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, and argues that the more that has been discovered about the man born in Stratford, the less he seems to fit the author as revealed in the plays and sonnets.
