BRYAN SCHOOL PROGRAMS REACCREDITED
BY NATIONAL MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION
GREENSBORO--The Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has received full reaccreditation for its undergraduate and master's degree programs from AACSB--The International Association for Management Education.
The school was reaccredited for the maximum 10-year period. It is among 383 colleges and universities which have achieved AACSB accreditation for their programs in business, including 366 American institutions. AACSB, which was formerly called the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, is a not-for-profit organization consisting of more than 800 educational institutions and corporations. It is the major accrediting organization for business schools and programs, with a mission of promoting excellence in management education.
"We are very pleased to have received reaffirmation of our business accreditation from the association," said Dr. James K. Weeks, dean of the school. "Since 1982, the Bryan School has been among less than one-third of higher education institutions in the U.S. which have been recognized by AACSB with accreditation of undergraduate and graduate programs.
"To receive reaffirmation of accreditation, school's must satisfy mission-linked standards and processes related to curriculum, faculty, students, and resources. This reaccreditation validates the Bryan School's achievement of overall high quality through continuous improvement in our programs."
For the accreditation, the Bryan School had to meet a wide range of quality standards, including curriculum, faculty resources, admissions, degree requirements, library and computer facilities, financial resources and intellectual climate. During the process, a reaccreditation team of business school deans with detailed knowledge of management education visited the school.
In the notification letter, the school was commended for three areas: its "impressive ‘esprit-de-corps' among faculty, staff and students"; the degree of involvement of various groups, including alumni, students and business leaders; and "high quality" student support services.
"We are particularly pleased to have received commendations for the quality of our student services, the involvement of our stakeholders in the life of the school, and the ‘esprit de corps' among faculty, staff and students," Weeks said.
Founded at UNCG in 1969, the Bryan School has a full-time faculty of 73, who teach 2,248 undergraduate majors and 370 graduate students. The school consists of the departments of accounting, information systems and operations management, business administration and economics. It also houses the Center for Global Business Education and Research. In addition to a variety of undergraduate majors, the school offers the following graduate programs: Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in accounting, Master of Arts in applied economics, Master of Science in business education, Master of Science in information technology and management and post-masters business certificates.
In 1987, the school was named in honor of Joseph M. Bryan, who died in 1995 at age 99. Bryan had a long career as an executive in broadcasting and insurance. He was president of Jefferson Standard Broadcasting Company (now known as Jefferson-Pilot Communications Company) from 1945-63. He also served as chairman of the board of Pilot Life Insurance Company and as senior vice president of Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company.
