The Acting Company to Present "American Dreams: Lost and Found" Feb. 8

GREENSBORO – The Acting Company, America’s only nationally-touring classical repertory theater, will bring a group portrait of America to the Aycock Auditorium stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

From an embittered winner of the Miss U.S.A. pageant who sees the con behind the dream of fame, to the businessman enamored of success, to farm kids dreaming of the city and city boys determined to get out, to the Boston Brahmin and the KKK – “American Dreams: Lost and Found” depicts the simple dreams and grand aspirations of all Americans.

Written by Studs Terkel, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and legendary oral historian, this Acting Company premier will feature original music and will be performed by a cast representing a diverse cross-section of American society. The one-night-only performance is part of UNCG’s University Concert/Lecture Series. Ticket prices are $21, $18 or $15, depending on seating. To purchase tickets, call 336-334-4TIX (4849). Free event parking is available behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum.

Founded in 1972 by current producing director Margot Harley and the late John Houseman, The Acting Company’s mission is to tour smaller cities, towns and rural communities. Through their performances, they reach thousands of people who have few opportunities to experience live professional theater; present superior productions of classic and contemporary plays to build a discerning national audience for theater; and commission and premier important new works by America’s foremost playwrights. The company’s aim is to foster a theater tradition in which story-telling, language and the presence of the actors are primary.

The company has been fulfilling its mission since it was formed out of the first graduating class of the Juilliard School’s Drama Division in 1972. Since then, it has traveled more than 500,000 miles through 48 states and nine other countries, performing a repertoire of 77 plays for more than 2 million people.

The Acting Company has won several Obie Awards, Audelco Awards, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and two Tony Award nominations. Notable alumni of the touring repertory theater include Kevin Cline, Patti LuPone, Lisa Banes, Frances Conroy, Keith David, Gerald Gutierrez, Harriet Harris, James Houghton, Mary Lou Rosato, Derek Smith, David Ogden Steirs and Jeffrey Wright.

The UC/LS season finale will be soprano Denyce Graves on Saturday, April 12. Recognized as one of today's most exciting vocal stars, mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves has gathered popular and critical acclaim in performances on four continents. She has become particularly well-known to operatic audiences for her portrayals of the title roles in "Carmen" and "Samson et Dalila" in many of the world's great opera houses and concert halls. USA Today identified her as one of the “singers most likely to be an operatic superstar of the 21st Century." Tickets will cost $35, $30 and $25.
