GREENSBORO – Two graduates with records of service in the fields of journalism and law will receive the 2003 Alumni Distinguished Service Awards at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro during alumni reunion activities

The presentations will be made during commencement weekend at the UNCG Alumni Association’s 110th annual meeting, set for 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, in the Elliott University Center. The awards recognize alumni who have contributed to the "liberal arts ideal" through service. This year’s recipients are:

• Rose Zimmerman Post of Salisbury, Class of 1948. An alumna who is well-known and widely respected in North Carolina journalism circles, Post is a columnist and writer for the Salisbury Post. Her stories have won her numerous awards from the N.C. Press Association and the N.C. Women’s Press Association. In addition, she has received an Ernie Pyle Award and an O. Henry Award. She is a past president of the N.C. Women’s Press Association. Her columns and feature articles are know for their warmth and depth, and she was described in her nomination as “…a prolific writer, an energetic interviewer, an outstanding team player. Above all, she has an inquisitive mind.” A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Woman’s College (now UNCG), Post got her start as editor of the Carolinian, the institution’s student newspaper.

• John L. (Jack) Pinnix of Raleigh, Class of 1969. Pinnix, an attorney who specializes in immigration law, is serving as president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and is nationally recognized in the field. In addition to his practice, Pinnix has given lectures at the Duke University Law School and is an adjunct professor at the N.C. Central University Law School. He has served on the UNCG Excellence Foundation board and he established a scholarship fund which provides annual awards to education students from Rockingham County. He was recognized as a Tar Heel of the Week by the Raleigh News and Observer. Pinnix is formerly of Reidsville and is a graduate of Reidsville Senior High School. While a student at UNCG, Pinnix was editor of the Carolinian during the turbulent times of the Vietnam War. He also earned an M.A. degree at UNCG in 1975.
