New Administrators at UNCG for Research,
Graduate School, and Continual Learning

GREENSBORO—A chief research officer has been appointed and two new deans have come aboard at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro at the start of the 2002-2003 academic year.

Following the UNC Board of Governors' approval, Dr. Rosemary Wander became associate provost for research, effective July 1. Dr. Robert Brown became dean of the Division of Continual Learning and Dr. James Petersen became dean of the Graduate School, effective Aug. 1.

Wander came to UNCG in 1999 as professor and chair of the Department of Nutrition.  Since spring of 2001, she has served as interim associate provost for research, while also maintaining a part-time role as department chair. Before coming to UNCG, Wander was professor of nutrition and food management at Oregon State University.

As associate provost for research, Wander will be responsible for advancing research, scholarship and creative activity at UNCG, and for providing leadership in administering the university's internally and externally funded research programs. She will play a lead role in university-related community and economic development. She will have oversight for the newly created Office of Technology Transfer, the Office of Research Services, the Center for the Study of Social Issues and the Institute for Health, Science and Society. Wander holds the Ph.D. degree from the University of Georgia.

Petersen comes to UNCG from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where he has been dean of the Graduate School and associate provost for research since 1999.  Before joining IUP, Peterson was a professor of sociology and associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University. He will hold a joint appointment as a professor of sociology with permanent tenure. He holds the doctorate from the University of Iowa.

In addition to administering the Graduate School, Petersen will work with UNCG's academic leadership to develop and expand graduate programs. As dean, he will formulate and implement policies to facilitate the work of faculty in graduate education, provide leadership in recruiting and retention of graduate students, and help develop criteria for evaluating and for guaranteeing quality in UNCG's graduate programs. He also will work with the associate provost for research to further UNCG's research mission.

Brown comes to UNCG from Oklahoma State University, where he has served since 1994 as director of arts and sciences extension, and has held a faculty position as an associate professor of English. He directed OSU's Technical Writing Program from 1990-94. Among his other assignments, he was a communications analyst with the Rand Corporation from 1988-90 and a report analyst with the U.S. General Accounting Office from 1983-88.

For the Division of Continual Learning, Brown is responsible for leadership, management, budgeting and strategic planning. He will be instrumental in identifying new trends in education for program development, and in the use of new technologies to deliver instruction.
