UNCG Move-in Week of Aug. 11; Classes Start Aug. 18
GREENSBORO - UNCG’s annual rite of passage begins the week of August 11, when new freshmen arrive and other students return for fall semester. Events, activities and new developments include:
• Classes start Monday, Aug. 18, at 8 a.m. UNCG is expecting another large freshman class.
• The annual Fall Kickoff carnival will be held Monday, Aug. 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along College Avenue and around the Elliott University Center Courtyard. (The event had to be partly relocated this year due to construction on College Avenue).
• Science Building – It’s the newest and biggest facility on campus, and UNCG’s new Science Building is finally open for classes after a two-year construction period. The 173,000-square-foot structure has new class and lab space for teaching chemistry and biochemistry and biology. It’s a far cry from the old lab and class space that UNCG had to depend on up until the N.C. Higher Education Bonds were approved in November 2000.
• Parking Deck – UNCG’s new parking deck, which has entrances off of Spring Garden Street and Oakland Avenue, will be open with the start of fall semester. The five-level structure will net approximately 1,000 new parking spaces for the campus. It’s been under construction since February 2002. It is situated behind Yum Yum’s, Greensboro’s venerable ice cream and hot dog establishment.
• Move-In Days: UNCG faculty and staff, including physical plant
employees and campus police, will be on hand to help.
- Move-in for new freshmen will be Thursday-Friday,
Aug. 14-15, starting at 9 a.m.
- Students living in the four dorms fronting on
College Avenue, now under construction, can start moving in on Monday-Wednesday,
Aug. 11-13.
(For the College Avenue move, 15 professional movers
from Fleming-Shaw Transfer & Storage will be working from 8-5 p.m.).
• Spartan Welcome Weekend will be Friday-Sunday, Aug. 15-17.
• Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan will have her State of the Campus address at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 13, with the faculty convocation following from 10:30-11:45 a.m., both events in Aycock Auditorium.
• The Chancellor’s Convocation for new students will be at 4 p.m. Sunday,
Aug. 17, in Aycock Auditorium. A picnic will be held at 5 p.m. in the Residence
Hall Quadrangle, followed by a fireworks display at 9 pm.
