UNCG Bands Exhibit Wide Musical Range
GREENSBORO — Eclectic works by composers from J.S. Bach to John Philip Sousa will drift from the School of Music in a three-part concert series beginning Monday, Nov. 25, at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The Wind Ensemble will give its first performance of the year at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 25 in Aycock Auditorium on the UNCG campus. Under the direction of Dr. John R. Locke, the Wind Ensemble will perform “Myaku” by David Dzubay, “Valdres” Norwegian march by Johannes Hannsen, “Danceries” by Kenneth Hesketh, “Danza de los Duendes” by Nancy Galbraith, “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich, “Toccata & Fugue in D Minor” by J.S. Bach, “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” by Richard Wagner, “Rocky Point Holiday” by Ron Nelson and “Koenigsmarsch” by Richard Strauss.
Graduate music students David L. Kish and Richard D. Edwards will guest conduct the Wind Ensemble, as well as lead concerts the following week with their own bands.
On Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m., the Symphonic Band will perform in Aycock Auditorium. Under Kish’s direction, the musicians will perform “Fantasia in G” by Timothy Mahr, “An Original Suite” by Gordon Jacob, “Air for Band” by Frank Erikson, “After a Gentle Rain” by Iannaccone and “Ghost Train” by Eric Whitacre. “Ghost Train” will feature a saxophone solo by Arthur White, UNCG Jazz Band director.
On Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m., the University Band will perform in Aycock Auditorium. Under Edwards’ baton, the band will perform “Flourish for Wind Band” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “The Liberty Bell March” by John Philip Sousa, “Capriccio Espagnol” by Micolai Rimsky-Korsakov, “Manatee Lyric Overture” by Robert Sheldon, “The Gathering of the Ranks at Hebron” by David Holsinger, “Harvesting the Fields of Russia” by Elena Lucas and “The Dream of Oenghus” by Rolf Rudin.
Tickets are available from the UNCG Box Office located in the School of Music building, and prior to the performance in Aycock Auditorium.
