DR. BARBA NAMED NURSING RESEARCH SCHOLAR

GREENSBORO -- Dr. Beth Barba, associate professor of nursing at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has been named a Hartford Institute Geriatric Nursing Research Scholar for summer, 2001.
Dr. Beth Barba

She was selected as one of 16 outstanding applicants from throughout the United States who will spend a week at the John A. Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University June 24 - 29.

The institute is dedicated to shaping care for the elderly nationwide through nursing and guiding innovation in nursing practice, education, research and public policy to enhance and humanize care for the elderly. During the week, Barba will learn how to improve the School of Nursing's ongoing research projects in gerontology, thereby helping to further one of UNCG's stated missions of expanding its research programs.

In addition to teaching, Barba has conducted extensive research on the human health implications in the relationship between humans and animals. Her recent work has involved examining the Eden Alternative -- a program of integrating animals, plants and children into the lives of nursing home residents. Together with Drs. Nancy Courts and Anita Tesh of the School of Nursing, Barba has been involved since 1998 on studying the Eden Alternative in nursing homes across North Carolina.
Other gerontological research in the School of Nursing involves examining issues concerning older adults with diabetes and chronic pulmonary disease, and older nurses who continue to work as staff nurses.

UNCG's concentration in Adult Nurse Practitioner/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner is one of five master's-level programs in the School of Nursing. Others concentrations are Nursing Administration, Nurse Anesthesia, Nursing Education and a program in conjunction with the Bryan School of Business that leads to an MSN/MBA degree.

Prior to joining the faculty in 1989, Barba spent 10 years in critical care nursing, and another decade teaching at institutions in New Jersey and New York. She received her doctorate from New York University.
