UNCG PROFESSOR RECEIVES NATIONAL THERAPEUTIC RECREATION AWARD

GREENSBORO — Dr. Leandra Bedini, an associate professor of therapeutic recreation at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, recently received a national award for her significant contribution in the field of therapeutic recreation.

Bedini is the recipient of the Scholarly Achievement Award given by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association. She was recognized for writing many articles that have appeared in therapeutic recreation journals that have been widely used or quoted as well as for her significant record of presentations at international, national, state and regional meetings. Bedini was also honored for her service on editorial boards and assisting in the review of scholarly submissions to various therapeutic recreation journals.

A specialist in therapeutic recreation in the School of Health and Human Performance, Bedini came to UNCG in 1992. She currently is directing a three-year project to bring more people of color and those with disabilities into the field of therapeutic recreation. The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services is supplying funding of $516,889.

Bedini's research interests include attitudes toward people with disabilities, women with disabilities and the leisure of caregivers. A graduate of East Carolina University, she holds the M.A. degree from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.
