Dr. Lew Brown

UNCG MARKETING PROFESSOR IS COAUTHOR

GREENSBORO--Dr. Lew G. Brown, associate professor of marketing in the Bryan School
of Business and Economics, is coauthor of a newly published textbook, "Cases in Strategic Marketing," which has been released by Prentice Hall.

Brown's coauthor is Dr. David Rosenthal, associate professor of marketing at Miami University of Ohio. The 610-page book contains 39 field-research-based business cases that are designed for use in strategic marketing courses.

Brown, who is author or co-author on 11 of the cases, pointed out that several of the cases are based on area companies, such as, Replacements, Ltd., Jefferson-Pilot Corporation, the Greensboro Housing Authority, Lowe's Companies, and the O. Henry Hotel.

These organizations cooperated in developing the cases and executives have been involved when undergraduate and masters students studied the cases and made presentations based on their analyses.

"These cases are excellent examples of how the Bryan School's faculty are working with local businesses and organizations to bring real-world business problems into the classroom," said Brown. "This enriches the learning environment for our students. The organizations also often benefit from students' recommendations."

A number of Bryan School faculty served as co-authors with Brown on his cases, along with several undergraduate research assistants who have worked with Brown as a part of the University's program to involve students in faculty research projects.

Brown joined the faculty of the Bryan School of Business and Economics in 1986, and is director of undergraduate programs for the school. In 1990, he received one of two UNCG Alumni Teaching Excellence Awards. He also was a finalist for the 1998 Board of Governor's Teaching Excellence Award from UNCG. He has served as faculty advisor to the Black Business Students Association and to the campus chapter of Pi Sigma Epsilon, a professional society for marketing. Brown received his undergraduate, master's and Ph.D. degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill. He was city manager of Southern Pines from 1974-77.
