MPA PROGRAM SELECTS CEMALA FELLOW AT UNCG
GREENSBORO—Natasha Nimmons has been selected to receive the first Cemala Fellowship for studies in the non-profit management track of the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Nimmons, who has received $8,000 in the fellowship award, is a graduate
student in the program. As part of the fellowship,
Nimmons is required to work in a Greensboro nonprofit agency. She has
chosen the American Cancer Society as her site where she will coordinate
the Tell-A-Friend program. She is a 2000 graduate of N.C. A&T State
University and is from Charlotte.
The fellowship is provided through the Cemala Nonprofit Fellows Program, which was created at UNCG through a $90,000 grant from the Cemala Foundation of Greensboro. The Cemala Fellowship is intended for a first-year, full-time student in the MPA program. In addition, seven scholarships also are provided for part-time students who work for Guilford County agencies. Two paid internships with Guilford County agencies also are provided.
This fall, three part-time students are Cemala Scholarship recipients: Cheryl Hopkins, Triad area manager for Lutheran Family Services Refugee Resettle Program; Kimberly Floyd, volunteer with the Advocacy Project for Persons with Disabilities; and Melanie McDonough, assistant director of development for Guilford Day School. Dawn Skaperdas served as the summer 2000 intern at the Piedmont Land Conservancy. Five students were selected as the first scholarship recipients during the past spring semester.
Now in its 25th year, the MPA program has just been reaccredited for another seven-year period by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. In addition to the nonprofit concentration, a nonprofit management certificate program is now being offered. This new 15-hour certificate program is expected to attract professionals from all areas of public service. Dr. Ruth DeHoog, a professor in the Department of Political Science, is coordinator of the program. Prospective applicants should contact the UNCG Graduate School (334-5596) for an application, and check out the MPA website: www.uncg.edu/psc/mpa.html.
