A Capella Group Chanticleer to Sing at UNCG Jan. 22
|
GREENSBORO--The blend of a dozen male voices, singing a cappella, will fill Aycock Auditorium when Chanticleer performs at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 8 p.m.
The Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble will sing interpretations of vocal literature from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to new music. As the only full-time classical ensemble in the United States, the group has earned its reputation by exploring the masterpieces of Medieval and Renaissance literature.
"It's great music, and it's a whole lot more wholesome and substantial than some of the other music people hear," said the group’s music director, Joseph Jennings, in the February 2002 Gramophone magazine. "This music has survived for hundreds of years - and it's survived for a reason."
While the focus is early music, the group is equally comfortable with folk songs from Cuba and Scotland, music inspired by Buddhist monastic chants, and American jazz, spirituals and doo-wop. Named for the "clear-singing" rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales," Chanticleer brings together an orchestra of voices, ranging from countertenor to bass. "You get sounds that shimmer and cling like hand bells on a chilly day," said Terry Teachout of The Washington Post.
Founded in 1978, the San Francisco-based group has recorded more than two dozen CDs. "Colors of Love" won the Grammy Award for best small ensemble performance (with or without a conductor) and the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for best classical album
