VICE CHANCELLOR CLOTFELTER
NAMED TO STATE COMMISSION

GREENSBORO—Dr. James Clotfelter, who is vice chancellor for information technology and planning at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has been named to the Commission on Indigent Defense Services by Gov. Jim Hunt.

The purpose of the organization is oversight of legal representation the state provides for indigent defendants. It has responsibility for improving and evaluating legal representation and establishing uniform policies for the delivery of legal representation.

Clotfelter has been a professor of political science at UNCG since 1977 and was named to his vice chancellor position in 1992. He served as department head from 1988-91. He is author of “The Military in American Politics,” and co-author of two other books, “Strategies for Change in the South” and “Political Choices.” He also is a former reporter for Time magazine.

He has served as chairman of the N.C. Child Care Corps and as director of the N.C. Service Project, which received more than $2 million in grant support. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, he also received his Ph.D. there, and holds the master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Before coming to UNCG, Clotfelter taught at Texas Tech University and Emory University.
