UNCG Theatre Stages ‘The Crucible’ April 23-May 2
(l-r)  Patti Walker plays Elizabeth Proctor, Kyle Payne plays John Proctor, and Cara Reid plays Abigail in "The Crucible."

GREENSBORO — UNCG Theatre will perform Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible,” winner of the 1953 Tony Award for Outstanding Play, in Taylor Theatre April 23-May 2.

Inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy’s hunt for communist sympathizers, the play is set during the Salem witch trials of 1692.

“‘The Crucible’ is both a gripping historical play and a timely parable of our contemporary society,” said director John Gulley. “Arthur Miller warns us of the danger of intolerance and group hysteria.”

When young girls begin to fall sick, rumors of witchcraft begin to circulate in the Puritan town of Salem, Mass. When girls confess to seeing the devil and accuse others of witchcraft, the courts investigate. The accused can escape prosecution if they admit they are witches and name other witches. Those who proclaim their innocence are hanged.

John Proctor comes under suspicion himself when he protests the court proceedings. Abigail Williams, the girl leading the witchcraft charges, accuses his wife, Elizabeth, of being a witch. Elizabeth had dismissed Abigail after finding that her husband was having an affair with her. Called to testify, the Proctor’s servant girl loses her will and charges Proctor with being a witch. Refusing to name other “witches,” Proctor is led to the gallows.

The play will be performed at Taylor Theatre on Tate Street April 23 and 24 at 8 p.m.; April 25 at 2 p.m.; April 28 and 29 at 7 p.m.; April 30 and May 1 at 8 p.m.; and May 2 at 2 p.m. Free parking for all shows is available behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum.

A discussion of the play with the director, cast and members of the honors program will follow the April 23 show. The performance April 29 will be sign interpreted for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

To order tickets by phone, call (336) 334-4849 on weekdays between noon and 5 p.m. Tickets also are available at the University Box Office and one hour before curtain time at Taylor Theatre.
