|
GREENSBORO—Rollin R. Donelson, who is the senior assistant chief with the campus police department of the University of Texas at Austin (UT), has been appointed director of police and public safety at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, effective on June 21.
Philip H. Richman, vice chancellor for business affairs at UNCG, announced Donelson’s appointment. Donelson was selected following a national search, which drew more than 90 applicants. He succeeds Ted Rivenbark, who resigned last fall.
“We are delighted that Rollin Donelson will be joining UNCG as director of public safety and police,” said Richman. “He brings more than two decades of solid experience to the job in such areas as campus security, crime prevention and criminal investigation. Hopefully, his expertise can help to further enhance a campus police department that already is outstanding. I look forward to working with him and the contributions he will make at UNCG.”
At UNCG, Donelson will head a department with 42 full-time and 20 part-time employees, including uniformed officers, telecommunications personnel, security guards and clerical staff. He will have overall responsibility for campus security, crime prevention, criminal investigations, emergency/disaster response, liaison with other police agencies, training and policy development.
Donelson has spent most of his career in campus law enforcement at the University of Texas, which has a student population of 49,000. A graduate of the institution, he has been with the campus police since 1975. He also earned a master of education degree at UT. He has done work toward a Ph.D. degree in public administration at Kennedy Western University.
At UT, Donelson was the senior assistant chief of the campus police from 1998 to the present, with responsibility for training, recruiting, internal affairs, planning, research, computer operations and inspections. He also had oversight for the Regional 911 Radio Coalition. He was captain of the field operations division from 1993-98, which involved serving as commander of the 150-member patrol division. From 1990-93, he was captain of the support services division, with oversight for criminal investigation, crime prevention, recruiting, records and supply. He held other ranks: lieutenant from 1987-90, where he was an administrative assistant to the chief of police, and as a sergeant from 1985-87 and 1977-79. He also served in the U.S. Army Military Police at the rank of lieutenant. Prior to his career in law enforcement, he was a public school teacher.
