GREENSBORO--Dr. Paula Egelson and Dr. Steve Bingham, two officials with the  Southeastern Regional Vision for Education (SERVE) laboratory at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro are among 85 educators nationwide who were selected to review middle school and high school Blue Ribbon Schools nominations in Washington, D.C.

The review sessions took place Jan. 7-12. Bingham is Director of the SERVE Leaders Institute, a model school leadership research and development project under contract with the U.S. Department of Education. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program was established by U.S. Department of Education in 1982.  Its purpose is to identify and recognize outstanding public and private schools across the country, to provide a framework of key criteria for school effectiveness that can assist with self-assessment and planning in schools, and to facilitate sharing of best practices in education among schools. Elementary and secondary schools are eligible to participate in alternate years.

Bingham provides technical assistance in school leadership, team development and school reform. He develops tools and processes designed to assist school teams in creating optimal environments for teaching and learning.  His teaching and administrative experience in the public schools  includes serving as principal of a North Carolina A+ School. He holds the doctorate in educational leadership from UNCG.

Egelson has held a variety of positions with SERVE over the past nine years.  Her areas of research include teacher evaluation, small class size, literacy and implementation of senior project in high schools. She has also been an elementary and middle school teacher, a reading clinician and a community organizer. She holds the doctorate in educational leadership from UNCG.
