BETTY ERVIN CHAIRING UNCG TRUSTEES

GREENSBORO--Betty C. Ervin, a civic leader from Morganton, has been elected chair of the Board of Trustees at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Thomas R. Sloan of Greensboro, who is chairman of both Southern Optical Company in Greensboro and of Essilor Laboratories of America Inc., was elected to a term as vice chair of the board. Kenneth C. Mayer Jr. of Greensboro, a partner with the architectural firm of Moser, Mayer, Phoenix and Associates Inc., was elected secretary. Two additional trustees, Karen McNeil-Miller of Greensboro and Hudnall Christopher of Winston-Salem, were elected to the board's executive committee.

Ervin, a member of the UNCG Board of Trustees since 1993, is a former president and long-time member of the UNCG Alumni Association. A member of the Class of 1950 of Woman’s College (now UNCG), she is a retired educator who taught social studies for many years at Freedom High School in Morganton. There she was previously honored as Teacher of the Year. In 1992, she was the recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award from the UNCG Alumni Association. She also is a former member of the board of directors of the UNCG Excellence Foundation. She has served on a variety of boards and organizations in Burke County, holding leadership positions in many of them.
