NEW EVENING UNIVERSITY OPENS THIS FALL AT UNCG
GREENSBORO—This fall, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is beginning an Evening University, which will allow working adults from around the Piedmont Triad to earn degrees after the workday is done.
The Evening University has been designed to meet the needs of North Carolina's fastest-growing population, 25- to 64-year-olds. According to U.S. Census data, that group is projected to grow by more than 20 percent between 1995 and 2025. Triad census results show that more than 50 percent of the region’s population falls into that age range.
Starting this fall, area students can complete undergraduate degrees in five areas and graduate degrees in 23 areas during evening hours. In addition, general education courses will be scheduled so students can complete preliminary work
"We want to be the leader in meeting the needs of working adults, undergraduate and graduate, in the Piedmont Triad who are seeking university degrees,” said Jim Black, associate provost for enrollment services. “Students today are looking for convenient and cost-effective classes, and as a public university, our tuition is a bargain. Given UNCG’s central location, our Evening University should be a good fit with the Triad, and especially with counties in and around the Triad."
Admission to the Evening University is through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (336-334-5243) or the Graduate School (336-334-5596). Pete Lindsey is director of the Evening University.
Undergraduate degrees offered include the Bachelor of Science in accounting, small business, business studies and social work, and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the R.N. to B.S.N. program. Additional degree programs and courses will be added.
Graduate degrees include the Master of Business Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Public Affairs, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Master of Science in Information Technology and Management. The Master of Arts degree is available in applied geography, communication, dance, history, French, sociology and Spanish. The Master of Science degree can be earned in chemistry, exercise and sport science, computer science, gerontology and in recreation, parks and tourism. The Master of Education degree is available in classical studies in Latin, communication, educational research and specialized educational services. The Ph.D. degree is availble in curriculum and instruction, educational research and exercise and sport science. The Doctor of Education degree is available inexercise and sport science.
Lindsey said that the Evening University will expand the number of general education courses offered after 6 p.m., expand the number of degrees offered and ensure that required courses are offered in a manner that does not cause schedule conflicts for students.
Convenience also has been a primary consideration in the planning, Lindsey said. The Evening University helps coordinate evening services that students might need, including the Office for Adult Students, dining services, parking, and, at certain times of the semester, registration and financial aid.
