UNCG HONORS EXCELLENCE WITH AWARDS FOR
TEACHING, RESEARCH, SCHOLARSHIP, SERVICE

GREENSBORO--Faculty members, students and staff at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro received awards for excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and service during the institution’s Excellence Day on May 2.

Two separate events were held, an afternoon Excellence Awards Convocation for faculty, graduate students and staff, and the evening Undergraduate Honors Convocation. The following honors were presented:

Gladys Strawn Bullard Awards for service-Staff winner, Cecelia S. Warren of Asheboro, executive assistant for the University Advancement Division; student winner, Ashley Nicole Leak of Charlotte, nursing major; faculty winner, Dr. John Rife, professor and chair, Department of Social Work.

Alumni Teaching Excellence Awards-Dr. Marsha Paludan, an associate professor in the Department of Theatre, senior faculty award, and  Grayson Sallez, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences,  junior faculty award. Both received University Excellence Medallions.

Research Excellence Awards-Dr. Carl Goldstein, a professor of art history in the Department of Art,  award to a faculty member at the rank of full professor; and Dr. John Dunlosky, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, award for a faculty member at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Both faculty members were presented with University Excellence Medallions.

M. Russell Harter Award for science research-Dr. Cheryl Lovelady, associate professor, Department of Nutrition and Foodservice Systems.

Outstanding Dissertation Award-John C. Hanes of Greensboro, education research methodology major, dissertation title: “Tapestry Over Time: A Tableau Approach to the Visualization of Multivariate Dynamics.”

Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award- Irving “Coy” Allen Jr. of Reidsville, biology major, thesis title: “Utilization of Polymerase Chain Reaction and Fluorescen In Situ Hybridization to Assess Fine Scale and Global Distribution Patterns of Pfiesteria Species.”

Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards-Andrea L. Dixon of Greensboro, doctoral student in curriculum and education development, School of Education; Harold Richards of Greensboro, doctoral student in nutrition and food service systems, School of Human Environmental Sciences; Sandra Mosteller of Greensboro, doctoral student in the School of Music; Miriana Lausic, Master of Fine Arts degree student in dance, School of Health and Human Performance; Kelly Richardson of Greensboro, doctoral student in English, College of Arts and Sciences.

Student Excellence Awards-Dipti Agarwala of Jamestown, information systems and operations management major; Dominick Amendum of Concord, music major, and Hannah Easley of Concord, French and education major; Elizabeth Auciello of Fuquay-Varina, Spanish major; Thomas Dempster of Spring Lake, music/composition major; James Gilchriest of Clemmons, English major; Jamie L. Hollingsworth of Goldsboro, nutrition major; Jennifer Holshouser of Lexington, chemistry major; Marguerite Howell of Elkin, history major; Erika Hughes of Winston-Salem, English major; Katherine McCarthy of Gastonia, political science major; Kristina Paabo of Harpswell, Maine, exercises and sport science major; Edgar Peck of Lewisville, exercises and sport science major; Melanie Pritchard of Asheboro, nutrition major; Gregory Shealy of Arden, history major; David Stewart of Carthage, business administration major; Autumn Talley of Buies Creek, communication major; Catherine Thompson of Elizabeth City, chemistry major; Tammy Thorarinson of Fayetteville, business administration and economics major; Susan Wall of Salisbury, middle grades education; Kelly White of Morehead City, English major; also from Greensboro, Amy Arnold-Canuso, women’s studies major, Erica Middleton, psychology major, Shanta Mitchell, elementary education major, Ivana Nicolic, biology major,  and Kathleen Thompson, communication major.
