FITZGERALD CONSULTS MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBIT

GREENSBORO — Dr. Thomas Fitzgerald, professor of anthropology at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, served as consultant when The North Carolina Museum of Art recently redesigned its  African, Ancient American and Oceanic galleries. The museum is located at 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh.

His primary responsibility was to help select South Pacific artifacts from the museum’s collection. These include 18th and 19th century face masks,  bone daggers, ceremonial bird snares and coconut graters, among other things. Fitzgerald also wrote each of the labels that accompany the objects displayed. The reopening of the galleries occurred Feb. 27.

Fitzgerald has conducted extensive fieldwork in the South Pacific including New Zealand and the Cook Islands. He is author of six books and more than 80 articles, many of which deal with the South Pacific Region.
