UNCG Theatre Presents Flannel Shorts Dec. 3-6
GREENSBORO – The eighth annual production of “Flannel Shorts,” a selection of plays written and performed by theatre students at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will run Dec. 3-6 in Brown Building Theatre.
The eight plays, each about 10 minutes long, tackle a variety of topics, including two sisters dealing with the loss of their father, two roommates who discover a fish that speaks to them and an intervention for a Disney fanatic.
Directed by Jim Wren, associate professor of theatre, and Michael Legg, an MFA graduate student, “Flannel Shorts” gives student actors the opportunity to create new roles, and gives playwrights an opportunity to see their work staged.
“There is no thematic thread, no through line or interweaving of stories. The plays are silly, satirical, clever, angst-ridden, funny, ironic and biting … everything you could imagine from young writers,” said Wren.
The “Flannel Shorts” project began eight years ago when Wren was searching
for a challenge for his student actors. Collaboration with the playwriting
classes was a natural solution. Professor Alan Cook, who teaches playwriting,
endorsed the project, because it gives student playwrights an opportunity
to see their work staged.
This year, the production features plays written by Lisa Bowers, Stacey
Joseph, Ben Michael, Kim Stauffer, Scott Whittimore and Ben Wolf.
The actors are Emily Covington, Chadwick Hubbard, Lori Ingle, Katie Lester, Steven Losack, Lauren Meeks, Matt Renegar, David Sebren, Justin Snodgrass, Will Triplett and Emily Vitrano.
The play will be performed in the Brown Building Theatre at 7 p.m. Dec. 3-4, and 8 p.m. Dec. 5-6. Free parking is available behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
To order tickets by phone, call (336) 334-4849 on weekdays between noon and 5 p.m. Tickets also are available at the University Box Office and one hour before curtain time at the Brown Building Theatre.
