GREENSBORO — The John Gamble Dance Theater will present a new work, “Virtual Lies … Redux,” Oct. 30 through Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. at the Dance Theater of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

“Virtual Lies … Redux” explores the pervasiveness of technology in people’s daily lives and addresses such issues as loss of body, body transformation and society’s increasing reliance on mediated communication. The piece is a collage of images - some humorous and others serious and poignant. The production fuses dramatic elements rooted in text with physical sections rooted in dance and movement. The original music and sound design is composed and arranged by Gamble, artistic director and professor of dance at UNCG.

“I have become increasingly perplexed by the invasion of technology into my world,” he said. “Our computerized communication, supported by e-mail, telephones, pagers and cell phones, that we now carry everywhere, does not enhance my connection to my fellow human beings. Instead they become deterrents and barriers to fundamental human exchange. Less and less do I talk with human beings face-to-face or body-to-body. I send an e-mail instead.”

In his 30 years as a choreographer, playwright and director, Gamble has created more than 60 original works. He received the N.C. Arts Council’s Choreography Fellowship Award in 1991. His work has been supported by private and public foundations, including the United Arts Council of Greensboro, the Philip Stern Foundation, the Max and Anna Levinson Foundation, the City of San Francisco and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The John Gamble Dance Theater is a multi-generational and multi-racial company of 30 dancers, actors and musicians. Its mission is to create theatrical works that address political and social issues using a blend of theater, dance, visual arts and music. With dialogue as an integral component, performances are intended to stimulate thought and change.

The UNCG Dance Theatre is located in the Health and Human Performance Building on Walker Avenue. Ticket prices are $12 general admission, $10 for senior citizens and students and $6 for UNCG students. Tickets can be purchased by calling the UNCG box office at (336) 334-4849.
