John Gamble Dance Theater Presents Retrospective

GREENSBORO - The John Gamble Dance Theater will present two dance works, Ocho Canciones and Falls From Grace, on Oct. 24 and 25 at the UNCG Dance Theater. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on Friday, and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Tickets can be purchased through the UNCG box office by calling (336) 334-4849.  Prices are $12 general admission, $9 seniors and students, and $6 for UNCG students.  The UNCG Dance Theater is located on Walker Avenue at Kenilworth Street on the UNCG campus.  Deck parking is available across the street.

Gamble, who is the artistic director and a UNCG professor of dance, choreographed both dances. He has been presenting his work in the Triad since 1985.

"Ocho Canciones" (Eight Songs) is choreographed to Mexican folk songs sung by Linda Ronstadt from her 1988 album "Canciones de Mi Padre." It is an uplifting romp that combines athletic modern styles with traditional Latino dance. The expanded work was first presented as "Seis Canciones" in 1988 at Aycock Auditorium.  It is in part inspired by Gamble’s experiences living in New Mexico in the early 1970s.

"Falls From Grace" is choreographed to Phillip Glass’s "Glass Works."  It is a highly kinesthetic and theatrical dance that explores relationships that pass through time. Performed by a cast of 24, Falls From Grace was made in 1993 for the International Festival of Dance held in Lyon, France.  It is an existential portrayal of one man’s attempt to connect with the people in his life.

Members of the company include Tamara L. Begley, Stephanie L. Blackmon, Nikki Bucks, Yvette Bull, Sarah Collins, Todd Fisher, Nathan Foreman, Virginia Ray Freeman, John Gamble, Kimberly Lynn Herndon, Alice Lee Holland, Melissa Jackson, Christine Kiernan, Seanne Kinsey, Alexander Lieberman, Andrea Long, Jennifer McNure, Love Muwwakkil, Michael Murray, Stephanie Pritchett, Aymen Robertson, Eleanor Smith, Cory Stephenson, Nathan Tomaszewski, Jonathan Yeatts, Wesley Williams Jr., and Natasha R.
