GIBSON NAMED DIRECTOR OF WOMEN'S STUDIES

GREENSBORO — Dr. Mary Ellis Gibson, professor of English, has been named director of the Women's Studies Program at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

In her new position, Gibson plans to build on past successes of the program. She hopes to foster a sense of intellectual community among undergraduates in the program, and increase participation in the numerous internships now available to students, ranging from opportunities in investment firms to non-profit organizations. Gibson said she's also looking forward to implementing a new distinguished professorship, which was made possible with an endowment of $373,000 from Friends of Women's Studies. In addition, two workshops for faculty during this academic year will focus on the cutting edge of research in Women's Studies, with a focus on how these current trends affect instructional method and content, Gibson said.

Interest in Women's Studies continues to grow at UNCG, Gibson said, as evidenced by the recent demand for a graduate program, which led to the establishment this year of a post-baccalaureate certificate in Women's Studies. At present, 12 students are pursuing the certificate, and approximately 40 undergraduates are pursuing majors or minors in Women's Studies.

Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary program which provides excellent preparation for careers in social services, law, medicine and non-profit management, Gibson said.

A UNCG faculty member since 1978, Gibson has written numerous journal articles, edited three books, and is author of two books, including "History and the Prism of Art: Browning's Poetic Experiments," and "Epic Reinvented: Ezra Pound and the Victorians." She received her Ph.D from the University of Chicago. Her research interests include 19th century British literature and American modernism.
