New Record of $35.6 Million Set at UNCG for Grants and Contracts

GREENSBORO--External funding for research, public service and creative activity at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro reached a record high of $35,625,617 during the 2001-2002 fiscal year.

"This University has set another new milestone by passing the $35 million level in external funding,” said Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan. “This success is a source of pride for the University. Our faculty deserves most of the credit for this outstanding year in external funding. Once again, they submitted innovative proposals and competed successfully against other faculty at many of best universities in the country.

"This level of funding makes possible many of UNCG's major outreach programs. It also moves us along toward our goal of  becoming the Triad's leading public research university, with a grant total of more than $50 million by 2008. But overall, this funding strengthens the University and the community as we seek to inspire and provide leadership for the Triad’s changing economy.”

The $35.6 million in external grants included $23.4 million in federal funding, coming primarily from the U.S. Department of Education. Other grants came from private foundations, non-profit organizations, state and local governments, and business and industry.

Among the federal agencies which have awarded grants to the University are: Environmental Protection Agency, National Foundation for the Arts and Humanities, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Education, Department of Energy, Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, Department of the Interior, and Department of Treasury.

Overall, UNCG received 229 individual awards during fiscal year 2001-2002, compared to 218 last year. The grant awards included the following: School of Education, $19.7 million; College of Arts and Sciences, $4.7 million; School of Human Environmental Sciences, $6.9 million; School of Health and Human Performance, $416,758; Bryan School of Business and Economics, $237,847; and School of Nursing, $693,160. Among UNCG's centers and institutes, the Center for the Study of Social Issues generated $1.2 million, and the Southern Regional Education Laboratory, formerly known as the Southeastern Regional Vision for Education (SERVE), generated $13.8 million.

UNCG Provost Edward Uprichard and Dr. Rosemary Wander, associate provost for research, also expressed pleasure with the final report.  Uprichard said, "I am especially pleased with the progress we have made in this area over the last five years. During that time, we have advanced from $18.2 million to $35.6 million. This represents an increase of approximately 95 percent."

Wander said, "Our success this year represents continued, steady growth in the funding that we have brought to campus to support research activities. This reflects the University's commitment to the support of research. We have improved, and will continue to improve, the infrastructure needed to have a successful research enterprise. Recently we have added the position of director of technology transfer to our team to foster research activities. This position will assist us as we move the research of the faculty to commercialization."     #####
