UNCG OFFERS NEW PROGRAM IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

GREENSBORO — The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is preparing individuals for the big boom in the state's tourism and hospitality industry by providing a new degree program in hospitality management.

UNCG's Hospitality Management Program prepares individuals for a variety of administration positions in the hotel, restaurant and travel fields and offers insight into a wide array of hospitality sub-industries to meet the needs of the growing demand in tourism in our state. Approximately 16 students are currently enrolled in the program.

According to the N.C. Department of Tourism, the state greets approximately 9 million visitors each year in its eight welcome centers. The state was ranked 12th in direct domestic travel spending among all 50 states in 1998. That same year, visitors spent approximately $11.2 billion, making tourism one of the largest economic sectors in North Carolina.

The new 122-hour bachelor’s degree provides a broad foundation in all areas of hospitality management. The curriculum includes a 400-hour internship, which provides hands-on experience in a formal work setting. Faculty from the Schools of Health and Human Performance and Human Environmental Sciences contribute to the program. The degree also includes selected courses offered by the Bryan School of Business and Economics. Additional credit hours in specialized focus areas will help students further explore their personal interests in a specific aspect of hospitality management.

"Students graduating with a hospitality management degree from UNCG will have access to the strongest job market in the world," says Dr. Bonnie Canziani, director of the Hospitality Management Program. "The World Tourism Organization forecasts that tourism will triple over the next decades, with 1.6 billion tourists traveling annually by the year 2020 and spending more than $2 trillion -- or $5 billion a day. It currently provides employment for 231 million people or one out of every 10 workers."

The program also provides information about hospitality operations and careers, including how to work and live in international settings.

"Industry analysts predict the hospitality industry, especially hotel and food sectors, will grow to be the largest employer in this country and abroad," Canziani said.
