USA TODAY NAMES JACKSON LIBRARY WEBSITE "HOT SITE"

GREENSBORO -- Jackson Library at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro maintains approximately 3,000 different web sites, many of which have received national recognition. One of those sites, "Sexual Harassment Resources",
Robert Gaines
was recently singled out as especially noteworthy by USA Today, which named it a "Hot Site," in both its print and online publications.

Since then, some of the major search engines, including Yahoo! and Alta Vista have included the site in their subject listings, and the numbers of "hits" in the Government Documents section -- where the site resides -- has ballooned from 14,000 hits per month to more than 19,000. Other search engines that have included links to the site include The Scout Report for Social Sciences, and the Librarians Index to the Internet.

"The Web makes it quick and easy to find laws and policies on sexual harassment," reads the USA Today notice. "Resources are provided by The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, library.uncg.edu/depts/docs/us/harass.html "

Created by Robert Gaines, head of the Documents/Microforms Division of Jackson Library, the website serves as a clearinghouse of information on the subject, looking at it from many angles. Included are links to educational programs relevant to small and large businesses or human resources professionals, legal decisions important for litigants or lawyers, or studies and surveys that might be pertinent to researchers. It includes information from North Carolina state government, U.S. Government and military, important court cases, educational sites, professional organizations that provide advice on the subject, and more. Everything included is full text; available for free, and is geared for use by anyone anywhere -- not just students and faculty on campus. Gaines has been invited to submit an article to the Newsletter of Federal Depository Library Program about the site.

"We are both a U.S. and a North Carolina government depository, and as such, are here to serve the public, not just the UNCG community," Gaines said. "We hope that this site provides the broadest possible access to sexual harassment information available on the web, and we are always open to suggestions concerning new material."

Gaines said he and other staff in the Documents Department are available to answer any reasonable question from any patron, anywhere, though they do not have the personnel to conduct detailed research. The department can be reached at (336) 334-5251, or by email at rfgaines@uncg.edu

Gaines joined the faculty of UNCG in 1974. Prior to that, he was an assistant professor history and political science at Tusculum College in Tennessee. He teaches a library course at UNCG for the Department of Library and Information Studies, and teaches evening classes in Western Civilization and United State History at Guilford Technical Community College. Gaines received a master's in history from Vanderbilt University, and a master's in library studies from the University of Tennessee.
