GOV. AND MRS. JIM HUNT TO BE GUESTS AT UNCG
FOR SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION IN THEIR NAME
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Gov. and Mrs. Jim Hunt
will be guests of honor at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
on Tuesday, Oct. 2, during a celebration of the Child Care Education Program
and the presentation of a new scholarship in their name. The event takes
place from 3:30 – 5 p.m. at the Curry Building playground.
The James B. and Carolyn L. Hunt Early Childhood
Education Scholarship will be presented to Jody Franz, an undergraduate
pursuing a four-year degree and license in birth through kindergarten education.
A specialization in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies,
the curriculum prepares students for careers in child care centers, agencies,
private kindergartens and hospitals. The $820 scholarship is funded through
a $63,000 endowment raised by the North Carolina Partnership for Children,
which established the scholarship at UNCG in 2000 to honor the Hunts for
their tireless advocacy on behalf of early childhood education. Thanks
to the Hunts, Smart Start has been established across North Carolina, helping
to insure all children enter kindergarten healthy and ready to learn.
The celebration will also observe the first anniversary
of the Infant Care Classroom and the creation of the Child Care Education
Endowment Fund at UNCG. Significant support for the endowment, now at $134,000,
came from the Weaver Foundation, the Grace Jones Richardson Charitable
Trust and the Smith Richardson Foundation, with additional support from
alumni, friends and supporters. Proceeds from the endowment support the
ongoing operation of the Childcare Education Program at UNCG, of which
the Infant Care Classroom is a part. The program has the ultimate goal
of increasing the endowment to $200,000.
Others to be honored at the event will be John Shore,
Director of the Guilford County Department of Social Services and Sherisa
Boone, recipient of this year’s Child Care Community Service Fellowship,
established by the Weaver Foundation in 2000. The $10,000 fellowship is
awarded annually to a graduate student in the Department of Human Development
and Family Studies who is working with an area agency to improve home-based
child care facilities. ###
