ITP STAFF DO STATE, NATIONAL PRESENTATIONS
GREENSBORO—Five members of the Division of Information Technology
and Planning (ITP) at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro have
made presentations at conferences around the state and nation. They are:

Dr. Gary M. Grandon, associate vice chancellor for information technology,
presented a session to the annual meeting of EDUCAUSE, the national association
of higher education information technology, in Nashville in October. The
session was titled “A Simple Guide to University e-Business.” He also headed
a session on “Integrating Digital Technology for Communication.” Grandon,
who came to UNCG in 1985, has served as associate vice chancellor for information
technology for the past nine years. He has written and presented a number
of works on network protocols, the Internet and the Information Highway.
He currently chairs the N.C. Research and Education Network advisory council
that advises UNC General Administration on statewide networking for higher
education.

Dr. Janice Tulloss, assistant director for student computing of the ITP
Department of Instructional and Research Computing, delivered a paper on
“Implementing Assistive Technologies: Opportunities and Challenges.” She
spoke in Richmond, Va., at the annual meeting of the Association for Computing
Machinery's Special Interest Group on University Computing Centers. She
formerly taught in Department of Political Science at UNCG where she created
and maintained the department's web site and student listservs. In 1998,
she followed her interest in academic computing to her current position
in ITP/IRC, where she oversees UNCG's open access computer labs and student
computing.

Larry R. Henson, director of management information systems for ITP, presented
a paper to the statewide meeting of UNC CAUSE with Renee Martin of N.C.
A&T State University. The paper was titled “The IS General Controls
Audit: What to Expect From a University Perspective." The paper was in
response to more comprehensive technology audit requirements facing UNC
computer centers. UNC CAUSE is a group of information technology professionals
from UNC campuses who promote, share and discuss new technologies, applications
and services.

Will Estes, a UNIX systems programmer, also presented at the UNC CAUSE
meeting that took place in September in Charlotte. The presentation was
on “Visually Impaired Access to the IT Workplace: Personal Reflections.”
Estes, who has been legally blind since birth, presented a sensitive and
informative session on what it's like to work as a visually impaired systems
programmer.

John Gale, a network systems programmer, also delivered a presentation
to the UNC CAUSE statewide meeting on “Proxy Server Deployment at UNCG
and Current Results.” Gale unveiled important work that may eventually
reduce overall network loads by 30% when using web-based applications.
He has worked closely with RedHat Linux deployment for corporate firewalls
and has general business Internet consulting experience
